Data Scientist Definition and Meaning Made Easy

Data Scientist Explained

A Data Scientist is a professional that combines advanced mathematics and programming to extract insights from data sets, mostly Big Data data sets.

Data Scientist job positions do not use a standard Data Scientist definition and do not require the same set of skills. But a regular Data Scientist role usually includes several or all of the following tasks: collect, clean, examine, model and interpret data.

Data Scientist is a professional with a unique blend of two skills:

  • Better mathematics than the average programmer, with a statistics focus
  • Better programming than most statisticians,

And they combine these skills to unlock the insights of Big Data.

Data Scientists use many different tools, which are growing in number by the day, notably as some of the most significant tech players are opening their Big Data and AI tools to the public, from Google’s Tensorflow or Big Query to IBM’s Watson or Amazon’s AWS Sage Maker.

A Data Scientist frequently works as a member of an analytics team which is composed of different profiles. To be successful in the real world, they need to understand about the business they are dealing with and work together with business experts in the analytics  team (refer to Big Data Processing Cycle and The Pitfalls of Not Following It)

A Data Scientist is not the same as a Data Engineer. Please refer to Data Engineer Definition and Meaning to understand the difference.
