Data Engineer Definition and Meaning Made Easy

Data Engineer Explained

A Data Engineer is a professional that gathers and prepares data for analytical and operational purposes, usually in the context of dealing with Big Data

Data Engineer job positions do not use a standard Data Engineer definition and do not require the same set of skills. But a regular Data Engineer role usually includes building data pipelines from different sources, dealing with structured and unstructured data, performing data conversion, integrating and consolidating it, defining the data architectures, and supporting some Data Science tasks such as data cleansing and enrichment.

The State of Data Engineering report published by Stitch, Inc in 2017, analyses all Linkedin Data Engineer profiles and they concluded that

  • 42% of Data Engineers graduated from a Software Engineering role
  • The top five skills listed by data engineers are: SQL, Java, Python, Hadoop, and Linux.

A Data Engineer is not the same as a Data Scientist. Please refer to Data Scientist Definition and Meaning to understand the difference.
